A Year in the Life of a Furman Delta Gamma

Today is the day that our class finally gets to show off our midterm project! This project was so much fun because I chose to cover a year in the life of a DG, and more importantly, reminisce on how far I have come in the past year! We were supposed to tell a story with the photos we selected and I chose to show the story of what happens between bid days.

Be sure to take a look at the captions I have included in my Flickr slideshow.

My venture with Adobe Photoshop started just about two weeks ago and I think I am doing pretty well so far! Check out these improvements:

My Sisters’ Accomplishments

Zeta Upsilon is well into formal recruitment! This weekend my chapter of Delta Gamma conducted first and second round of formal recruitment. I could not have had more fun! Getting to talk about DG and my sisters all day is one of my favorite things and I LOVE to meet and learn about new people. Between parties, though, that has got to be my favorite part. We dance and sing and take silly pictures. Honestly, I bet that if the Potential New Members could see that, they would definitely go DG.

All that being said, I was ready to be antisocial when I got back to my dorm room. (We were stuck in the same room from 8:00AM to 7:00PM!) So naturally I turned on the TV and tried my best to veg out. Then it struck me, MISS AMERICA IS ON! Naturally being the up-to-date and well-informed DG that I am, I knew that one of the contestants happened to be a sister of mine!

Miss District of Columbia, Jen, is a Delta Gamma! And a pretty involved one at that! She said on her blog that as a collegiate, she “minored in Georgia football and Delta Gamma.” (A woman after my own heart!) Jen was even a Collegiate Development Consultant for Delta Gamma after she graduated the University of Georgia, meaning, she traveled around the United States for a year to visit different chapters and provide advice on everything from recruitment to life after college. She also assessed the functionality of each chapter as it played in to recruitment. (How exciting!) Although Miss New York took the title, I was very proud of my sister Jen for making it as far as she did.

Saturday was one of those “full-circle” days. In the morning I was recruiting girls to join the organization that has inspired me to achieve so much and in the evening watching one of my beautiful sister’s dreams come true.

Needless to say, I went to bed incredibly happy. The following day we hosted our philanthropy round, which I promise to blog about later this week.

Welcome!

Welcome to That Greek Girl!

My name is Elle and I am a sophomore studying Communications at Furman University in South Carolina. I grew up in Florida so moving so far from home to go to college was a big step and proved to be difficult. When I went through sorority recruitment in January of 2012, I was able to find my “home away from home.” Now, I am getting ready to help other women to find their niche here on campus as we sorority women prepare for this year’s recruitment.

My answer to the “When you grow up…” question has changed over the years from doctor, to chef, to journalist. Today, I believe that I can finally answer the question with some conviction. My experience with Greek Life has led me to aspire to be someone who can facilitate a positive experience similar to the one that my sorority’s advisor has provided to me. I would like to become a Director of Greek Life at a University upon graduation from graduate school. I would like to attend the University of Georgia or Florida State University to earn a Masters degree in Education Administration. While in graduate school I would love to be a house mother to one of my sorority’s chapters that are present on both campuses.

As a part of my Digital Communications class here at Furman, we are instructed to complete a blog, and this is it! I would not consider myself technologically savvy so I hope to become more comfortable with digital media upon the completion of the course. I chose to start a WordPress account because of the ease of use that it offers, as well as the fact that many of my beautiful and helpful sisters offered their expertise in using the blogging platform. The design motif is incredibly feminine, as am I, so the color scheme and font choices were selected to show readers a little bit of my personality.

The main focus of this blog is the lives of members of Greek letter organizations both while they are in college and following graduation. Topics that I plan to explore range from stereotyping, hazing, life after college, scandals, philanthropies, sisterhood and brotherhood, among others.

I look forward to discovering more about Greek Life through the administration of this blog. To wrap up each post, I intend upon including a few discussion questions to get us talking. Today, my questions are:

  1. Are you involved in Greek Life? Do you know anyone involved in Greek Life?
  2. Do you think that chapters of the same organization differ from university to university or are they the same?
  3. Why do you think people join Greek letter organizations?

Talk to you soon!
